How to get your NJ Driver's License

Steps to getting a NJ Driver’s License

Is your teen ready to get their NJ Driver’s License? Getting a driver’s license in New Jersey can be done in 6 simple steps when enrolled in Red Bank Driving School. Read on to see how.

STEP 1

Take The Knowledge Test

The Student will be able to take their knowledge test at school when they have Drivers Ed, but if you’d like them to take it sooner, at 16, they can take it here at RBDS for $25.  They will also be required to take a vision test which can be administered right in the office at RBDS.

(If they are 17 and older, they have to take the test at MVC.)

IF THEY FAIL, they can re-test in 7 days.
IF THEY PASS, we’ll submit their permit application to MVC for processing.

STEP 2

Behind-the-Wheel Instruction

Complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with Red Bank Driving School in a dual-controlled vehicle with a licensed driving instructor.

RBDS will complete the student permit at Eatontown Motor Vehicle. Once completed, the MVC agency will validate the permit for practice driving and it will be valid for 2 years.

STEP 3

Practice driving.

Practice supervised driving (see tips below for more info) for at least 6 months. A month before their road test, call Red Bank Driving School to schedule the road test appointment if you would like them to use one of our cars and get a refresher lesson before the test.

NOTE: They cannot get their probationary license until they are 17 years of age.

STEP 4

Take the Road Test.

Red Bank Driving School will pick the student up the day of the Road Test (as long as you have scheduled in advance) and practice the skills needed to pass the test. Then when they feel confident, we bring them to Eatontown MVC to take the road test with our car. (A parent should meet them there for processing of license and pick up)

IF THEY PASS, the permit will be stamped and they can go to the next step.
IF THEY FAIL, they must wait a minimum of 14 days before they can re-test.

STEP 5

Get the Probationary Driver’s License.

A Probationary Driver’s License can be obtained at Eatontown MVC, or at any Licensing Center with their stamped permit and proper documents. This will expire in 3.5 years and they must renew or upgrade to the Basic License.
